Zelda Breath of the Wild: Cold Resistance Guide

One of the first things to do in Zelda: Breath of the Wild is to get cold resistance to reach a certain Shrine on an icy mountain located on the Great Plateau. There are two ways to get cold resistance in Zelda BotW - we'll explain them to you here.

Except its sequel Tears of the Kingdom, no Legend of Zelda game out there has as much MMO aspects as Breath of the Wild: You have an open world, you can farm all kinds of items, improve armor sets and solve quests in more than just one way. The last aspect also counts for one of the very first riddles in the game, when you find yourself on the Great Plateau, having to reach four mighty Shrines.

To enter one of those Shrines, called the Keh Manut Shrine, you have to reach the peak of an icy mountain. The actual problem isn't to discover a route to get there, but rather to find a way to get cold resistance, since the cold will continuously cost you health – and with only three heart containers at the beginning, you won't make it to the Shrine in time before you die.

So, here's a guide that will help you to get cold resistance to survive icy regions like the Great Plateau in Breath of the Wild. There are two different ways to get cold resistance in BotW - you can either cook yourself a meal that provides you with resistance to cold for a limited time, or complete a little quest to get an armor piece that will resist a certain amount of cold.

Option 1: Cook A Meal That Protects You Against The Cold

To cook a meal that protects you against cold, head over to the Temple of Time area and pick up some Spicy Peppers. You can usually find them near trees and bushes. Alternatively, you'll also find Spicy Peppers in the house you have to head to for the second option.

Once you've collected a few Spicy Peppers, find a cooking pot (there's one near the Woodcutter's house as well). Drop a Spicy Pepper and some raw meat (you can hunt animals for this) into the pot. Cook them up to get a Spicy Meat Skewer. Eating this dish will keep you warm for several minutes. The more Spicy Pepper you put into the meal, the longer the effect will last.

Option 2: Get The Warm Doublet

If you prefer a more permanent solution, go for the Warm Doublet. To get it, head to the Woodcutter’s house south of the Temple of Time and read the Old Man's Diary. It'll tell you about a recipe. Cook the dish, which contains the ingredients Spicy Pepper, Raw Meat and a Hyrule Bass. You can find the fish near the Temple of Time – to get the meat, hunt down some boars in the Forest of Spirits in the North.

As soon as you've collected all the ingredients, cook the meal, speak to the Old Man again and he'll reward you with the Warm Doublet. Wear it, and you'll be warm even in the coldest weather – at least on the Great Plateau.

Zelda BotW: How To Reach The Shrine Fast After Getting Cold Resistance

Now that you're all warmed up, you can head to the shrine on the Great Plateau. With your warm food or clothing, you'll make it there just fine. You can walk the path that starts between the Woodcutter's house and the Temple of Time – or take a shortcut.

From the Woodcutter's house, head west until you reach an abyss. Now cut a tree with an axe to build an unconventional bride to the other side.

Once there, you can begin climbing the mountain. Do not jump and be sure to make use of any little plateaus on your way up, since you have very little stamina at the beginning of the game. If you manage to reach the top, you will literally stand directly in front of the Shrine you wanted to reach.

And that's it! Good luck on your further adventures!
