A God of War Ragnarök PC version has a good chance to become reality, allowing players to experience Kratos' latest adventure via Steam on computers. There are already some hints that GoW Ragnarök could get a PC port, and thanks to a comment from PlayStation Studios we also can say something about the possible release date.
God of War Ragnarök (read our review here) was released on November 9, 2022, for PS4 and PS5. Many fans, myself included, have had an amazing time seeing how the story of Kratos and his son Atreus continues after the brilliant reboot in 2018. The best way to play that first game is probably on PC now (it's on Steam and luckily it's one of the PC ports that run properly), even though everyone knows that God of War is a PlayStation-exclusive series. But the port was really great and made a fantastic game even better.
What about GoW Ragnarök though? Will the sequel also come to PC? There are already some hints towards a possible PC version, including from an interview with series creator Cory Barlog and a tasty clue left by one of the developers. We'll sum up what the status of a possible God of War: Ragnarök PC port is, as well as a possible release window.
God of War Ragnarök: PC Port Likely To Be Developed
To start with the most meaningful message: There's a good chance that God of War Ragnarök will come to PC, just like its predecessor. But to be clear, there's no guarantee, as a port hasn't been officially announced so far.
We will explain why a GoW Ragnarök PC port is likely in a minute. But let's first look at what has been said publicly about it. Cory Barlog, co-creator of the series and director of the 2018 reboot, was asked about a PC version of Ragnarök in an interview by Game Informer shortly after the first game was released on Steam. And he was very coy about the whole thing.
I have no idea. Right now, we’re taking it one game at a time, kind of looking at each one and determining, “Okay, is this the best thing?” And we’ll gauge how it does. Do people enjoy it? Did we do it right? Is there anything we did wrong? What can we do better in the future if we do this again? But at the end of the day, ultimately, it’s Sony’s decision.
Now, this is obviously not very encouraging. We still believe that God of War Ragnarök will come to PC though. Why? First of all: Because Sony is still bringing many of their major titles to the PC, it's just taking a while. We already got Horizon: Zero Dawn, Days Gone, most recently Spider-Man and also The Last of Us Part 1 made it to PC this year.
Of course, the first God of War game also came to PC and was a big success. We assume that Sony will do the same with the sequel. Why wouldn't they?
We also got another, more concrete hint towards a PC version. This one comes from Jetpack Interactive, which was the lead development studio for the PC version of God of War (2018). On its LinkedIn page, it not only states that the first GoW port was commercially successful, but also that the studio “continues to work with Sony Santa Monica on the God of War franchise” – and even almost a year after Ragnarök's release on PlayStation the statement is still there. That pretty clearly suggests that Jetpack will also make a PC version for Ragnarök.
God of War Ragnarök On PC: Release Date Estimation
If GoW Ragnarök will be confirmed to get a PC port, the next important question to answer will of course be the release date. God of War on PS4 debuted in 2018, and we needed to wait almost four years until Kratos finally arrived on Steam. But thanks to a statement from PlayStation Studios head Hermen Hulst, we have a hint that things could speed up a lot for GoW: Ragnarök.
In a YouTube video shortly published after the game was released, Herman explained: "I think going forward we'll see at least a year between releases on PlayStation and on the PC platform, possibly with the exception of live service games". Hearing this, we can be pretty sure that a PC version of Ragnarök won't release before 2024 – and we would probably have had an official announcement by now if the port was intended to release in 2023. Looking at when Sony released their former PlayStation exclusives on PC, we'd expect a release in mid or late 2024.
Obviously, this is just an educated guess until we get the official confirmation of a PC port. But like we said, this could take a while. God of War (2018) and Marvel's Spider-Man took a whopping four years to come to PC, Horizon took three and so on. At least The Last of Us Part 1 came a little quicker than that. But you should still be ready to wait a little while...
