Riot Games has built its own game launcher for their extensive games catalog. Not only do we have League of Legends and VALORANT, but also a card game, as well as upcoming titles like the unnamed MMORPG and Project L, an upcoming fighting game.

To be able to log in to any of these games though you'll need a Riot account, as well as a Riot ID. But what is the Riot ID even and how is it different from a Summoner Name? Let's check out the differences right now so you can play your favorite game in peace.

Riot ID: How To Get One?

When you want to create a Riot Account, you'll automatically create a Riot ID at the same time. The Riot ID consists of your in-game name — the name everyone is able to see — and a hashtag followed by a tagline which consists of 3-5 numbers or letters. So your Riot ID will look a little something like this: [in-game name]#[tagline]

But don't worry, your friends won't be seeing the hashtag and the characters when you're playing online with them. They will see it though if they hover over your name in their friend list after a match and in the game client.

Why Was The Riot ID Created?

Thanks to the Riot ID, players are able to get the in-game name they want and have more flexibility with their names. For anyone who started playing Valorant after already playing League, you'll automatically have the same in-game name as your League of Legends account.

If you realize though that your League of Legends username from 5 years ago is childish and doesn't represent you anymore, you're able to change your Riot ID and have different names in the two games.

Does Your Riot ID Replace Your Summoner Name in League of Legends?

Until now, the Riot ID was not a replacement for the Summoner Names, but that is about to change. Riot has published on their website that on October 20 Summoner Names will be replaced by Riot IDs.

Where do you find the Riot ID

The Riot ID can easily be found on your account page. You just have to log into your account, and you'll be able to see everything you need to see about your account. It's also where you can change your password and enable two-factor authentication!

You can also connect your Riot account to Prime Gaming for prime gaming goodies and to Twitch, so you can receive drops for watching esports events like theLeague of Legends World Championship.

Can You Change Your Riot ID?

Now the most important question of all. Are you able to change your Riot ID? Yes, you can change the ID. Just follow the steps below, and you can get your own new Riot ID.

  1. Go to Your Riot Account Page
  2. Check under Account Management
  3. Click on Riot ID
  4. Change Riot ID in the First Row

How Often Can You Change Your Riot ID?

Until now, you were able to change your Riot ID for free once every 30 daysaccording to the Riot ID FAQ. But with the upcoming limitation, you'll be able to change your Riot ID only once within 365 days. You can also customize your tagline, which should make it easy to remember for yourself and will also mean that your friends can easily find you through the ID system.

Is Riot ID And Riot Username The Same?

No, the Riot ID and the username are not the same thing. The Riot ID is what players see in-game, while the username is what players use to sign in to their accounts. With the Riot ID, players can have the same names, thanks to the invisible tagline differing from that of other players.

The username though has to be completely unique, since this is what players use to log into their accounts. That's why in 2021 Riot made thousands of users change their username to avoid any conflict as they created their global Riot Games client.
