The Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal provides a detailed look into the incident that shocked the United States back in 2021. The six-week murder trial of Alex Murdaugh came to a surprisingly swift conclusion in March 2023. But that doesn't mean that there are no longer things to explore with the Netflix documentary, as the series' executive producer teases the possibility of season 3.

The Netflix description reads as follows: The Murdaughs were one of South Carolina’s most prominent families, but the death of teenager Mallory Beach in a drunken boating accident began the unraveling of their legacy. When Paul Murdaugh – the alleged driver of the boat – and his mother Maggie are found brutally murdered, a century of corruption, power, and cover-ups in the Low Country is brought to light.
The three-part series will feature first-hand accounts from those on the boat that fateful night, many of whom have not spoken about the crash or double homicide of Maggie and Paul until now, including: Paul Murdaugh’s longtime girlfriend, Morgan Doughty; Mallory Beach's childhood friends, Miley Altman and Connor Cook; Mallory's boyfriend, Anthony Cook; and, several others.

Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal Season 3: “This Story Is Going To Continue”

In an interview with Variety the executive producer and director of the series, Michael Gasparro addressed the possibility of Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal Season 3 and look at that, there are plans to continue the story.

Season 2 ended with Alex Murdaugh being found guilty of the murder of his wife and son . So how could season 3 continue the story? Well, Gasparro explains how there are more stories to tell, especially regarding the family's “financial crimes”.

This story is just going to continue to fold over the next decade — all these financial crimes, where’s all the money? There’s so many things that haven’t been told yet that are going to come out over the next 10 years.

So there's definitely still more to the story, that a potential season 3 could explore, and it looks like Gasparro is definitely up for the task.

Now, the only question that remains is, whether Netflix considers the series to be worth the investment of another season.

Considering that the second season has been holding its own in the Netflix Top 10 in the US, for around 3 weeks already, things are looking good on that front.

So yeah, Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal Season 3 is looking good, but so far we don't know whether it's actually going to happen! All we can do is wait and see whether Netflix is actually giving another season their blessing.
